La mayoría de estos poemas fueron escritos para ser regalados a los hijos de algunos amigos en ejemplares únicos que a veces el autor ilustraba. Cada uno tiene su pequeña historia y su justificación. Nunca pensó publicarlos hasta que Jesús Munárriz le ofreció esa posibilidad. De haber sabido que terminarían en un libro el resultado habría sido seguramente bien distinto. De alguna manera son estos versos el pago que él les daba a esos niños amigos a cambio de todo lo que ellos a su vez le daban: distracción, asombro, un irreprimible sentimiento de ternura y también, cómo no, algunos de sus secretos. Porque para todos, los adultos, los niños pueden llegar a ser una de las fuentes más seguras de información y de conocimientos.
