Fathers and sons

COP $ 28.000Fathers and sons is one of the greatest of nineteenth century Russian novels and has long been acclaimed as Turgenev\'s finest work. It is a political novel set in a domestic context with a universal theme - the generational divide between fathers and sons. Set in 1859 at the moment when the Russian autocratic state began to move hesitantly towards social and political reform, the novel explores the conflict between the Iiberal-minded fathers of Russian reformist sympathies and their free-thinking intellectual sons whose revolutionary ideology threatens the stability of the state. At its centre is Evgeny Bazarov, a strong-willed antagonist of all forms of social orthodoxy who proclaims himself a nihilist and believes in the need to overthrow all the institutions of the state. As the novel develops Bazarov\'s political ambitions become fatally meshed with emotional and private concerns, and his end is a tragic failure. The novel caused a bitter furore on its publication in 1862, and this, a year later, drove Turgenev from Russia. Nota: el contenido de este libro se encuentra en inglés. COP $ 28.000Anton Chekhov is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of short stories. He constructs stories where action and drama are implied rather than described openly, and which leave much to the readers imagination. This collection contains some of the most important of his earliest and shortest comic sketches, as well as examples of his great, mature works. Throughout, the doctor-turned-wríter displays compassion for human suffering and misfortune, but is always able to see thc comical, even farcical aspects of the human condition. Chekhov sees and depicts life with unwavering honesty and truthfulness, although a clear moral sense can be detected beneath his apparent objectivity. COP $ 48.000When it was first published in 1781, The Confessions scandalised Europe with its emotional honesty and frank treatment of the author\'s sexual and intellectual development. Since then, it has had a more profound impact on European thought. Rousseau left posterity a model of the reflective life - the solitary, uncompromising individual, the enemy of servitude and habit and the selfish egoist who dedicates his life to a particular ideal. The Confessions recreates the world in which he progressed from incompetent engraver to grand success; his enthusiasm for experience, his love of nature, and his uncompromising character make him an ideal guide to eighteenth-century Europe, and he was the author of some of the most profound work ever written on the relation between the individual and the state. COP $ 28.000The proverbial phrase \'Lifes little ironies was coined by Hardy for his third volume of short stories. These tales and sketches possess all the power of his novels: the wealth of description, the realistic portrayal of the quaint lore of Wessex, the \'Chaucerian \' humour and characterisation, the shrewd and critical psychology, the poignant estimate of human nature and the brooding sense of wonder at the essential mystery of life. The tales which make up Life\'s Little Ironies tenderly re-create a rapidly vanishing rural world and scrutinise the repressions of fin-de-siécle bourgeois life. They share many of the concerns of Hardys last great novels, such as the failure of modern marriage and the insidious effects of social ambition on the family and community life. Ranging widely in length and complexity, they are unified by Hardys quintessential irony, which embraces both the farcical and the tragic aspects of human existence.Nota: el contenido de este libro se encuentra en inglés.The tales which make up Life\'s Little Ironies tenderly re-create a rapidly vanishing rural world and scrutinise the repressions of fin-de-siécle bourgeois life.
