Desde los orígenes de la Literatura han estado presentes en ella los fantasmas, los sucesos o seres malignos y otros entes fantásticos. Los espíritus que regresan de la tumba para exigir venganza resultan aterradores sólo porque introducen en las novelas un matiz de duda; incluso la posibilidad de que sean apariciones del demonio en lugar de auténticos espíritus, confiere dinamismo y energía a la acción de las narraciones. Por lo general, las novelas de terror están ambientadas en escenarios lúgubres y misteriosos: castillos góticos, monasterios en ruinas, escaleras secretas, etcétera. Más información
